Helen Porter
composer, singer, voice coach


Helen has established a reputation for accessible contemporary, dramatic music – described as modern and melodic, passionate and engaging. On graduating from Bristol University in 1985 she co-founded Public Parts Theatre Company, and composed music for nine shows between 1986 and 1992 before continuing as a freelance theatre composer. Her music theatre work includes an award winning adaptation of Moll Flanders (1994), The Monk (1996), Scrooge (1997), The Hound Of The Baskervilles (2002) and The Highwayman and Other Songs From The Shadows (2006). From 1998 – 2001 she was the music animateur for Common Ground’s ‘Confluence – New Music For The River Stour’ project.

Helen is currently involved with Opera Genesis at the Royal Opera House, working on her chamber opera, and has recently composed songs for the London Sinfonietta, for the ‘Carbon Copy Cabaret’ at Kings Place. Helen was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2008.
