Peter Ursem has explored the ever-changing moods and character of the Stour through the ancient yet unlimited medium of the woodcut. The traditional woodcut is in essence an extreme black and white art form of yes or no, of every square dot on the woodblock either getting cut or not. Printing in more colours and using different materials and techniques bring endless other options, without loosing that typical purity of the relief. In this handmade book Peter has experimented with many ways of cutting and printing to capture the river’s character in its different settings. ‘Reflections’, shows how the Stour starts as an almost negligible dribble springing from ‘Six Wells Bottom’ (the valley north-west of Stourhead), yet has 60 miles and 35 hours later grown to be a considerable waterway which mostly helps but sometimes brings danger to the land. |
